MA Department of Public Health offering Free Suicide Prevention Program
Screening for Mental Health in Wellesley Hills, MA is the non-profit organization that runs the SOS (Signs of Suicide) Prevention Program for secondary schools. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has offered to provide free SOS kits to a limited number of MA schools, as part of their statewide suicide prevention efforts. MASCA members can apply for this opportunity on the website mentioned below.
The Signs of Suicide Prevention Program is an evidence-based program for secondary school students that combines education and mental health screening. SOS teaches youth to recognize the signs of depression and suicidality in a loved one and in themselves, and how to respond effectively. The SOS program is the only school-based suicide prevention program to show a reduction in suicide attempts (by 40%) in a randomized controlled study and is the only one listed on SAMHSA's National Registry of Effective Programs and Practices. The program was designed to be easily implemented in one or two classroom sessions by school staff, and all the materials needed are provided in the SOS kit. The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) is a sponsor of this program.
You can learn more about the SOS program and how to apply for an SOS kit at: www.mentalhealthscreening.org/highschool .
